How to Create a Quiet-Luxury Living Room

Short answer: build the room around one excellent sofa, keep to a restrained neutral palette, choose natural materials that age well, light the room in warm layers and keep decoration to a few meaningful objects. Quiet luxury is about how a room feels to live in, not how loudly it shows what it cost.

What is quiet luxury?

Quiet luxury is an approach to interiors that values craftsmanship, material quality and proportion over logos, ornament and trends. The result is calm to look at and comfortable to live in. Read more on quiet luxury furniture.

Seven steps to a quiet-luxury living room

  1. Start with the sofa. It is the piece you use most. Choose a clean-lined design in a quality fabric, velvet or leather, sized to the room — not the largest that fits.
  2. Set a restrained palette. Two or three tones — warm white, sand, taupe, sage or deep brown — repeated across upholstery, rug and walls.
  3. Use natural materials. Marble, solid timber, linen, wool and leather add depth without pattern, and look better with age.
  4. Choose one focal table. A stone or timber coffee or centre table gives the room a centre of gravity.
  5. Light in layers. Combine soft ambient light with floor and table lamps; avoid relying on one bright overhead light.
  6. Edit the accessories. A few books, a ceramic piece, one artwork. Leave surfaces partly empty.
  7. Get the proportions right. Leave walking space around furniture and keep pieces in scale with the room. This is where bespoke furniture helps most.

Which furniture works best?

Low, clean-lined sofas; sculptural but comfortable accent chairs; stone or timber tables; and upholstered pieces in soft neutrals. Leather adds warmth and wears beautifully — see KUKA leather sofas.

Common mistakes

  • Too many statement pieces competing for attention.
  • Cool, flat lighting that makes neutrals look grey.
  • Furniture that is too big for the room.
  • Visible branding and logos.
