Short answer: ready-made furniture is produced in fixed sizes and finishes and is available sooner; bespoke furniture is designed and made for a specific room and client, so the size, materials and details are decided with you before it is built. Choose bespoke where fit and finish matter most, and ready-made where a standard piece already does the job.
What is bespoke furniture?
Bespoke furniture starts with your space rather than a catalogue. A designer looks at the room, the way you use it and your existing interiors, then proposes a piece — its dimensions, form, upholstery or stone, and finishes. Once you approve the design it is made to order by craftsmen. At Indesign in Kirti Nagar, Delhi, sofas, beds, dining tables and chairs, coffee and centre tables and storage can all be made this way.
What is ready-made furniture?
Ready-made furniture is designed for a typical room and produced in set sizes and a limited choice of finishes. It is a sensible choice when a standard size fits, when you need a piece quickly, or when you want to see exactly what you are buying on the showroom floor.
Bespoke and ready-made compared
| Bespoke | Ready-made | |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Sized to your room, to the centimetre | Standard sizes |
| Materials & finishes | Chosen with you: fabric, leather, stone, metal, wood | A fixed range |
| Design | Adapted to your interiors and your designer’s scheme | As shown |
| Time | Made to order; timeline confirmed once the design is final | Usually sooner |
| Best for | Statement pieces, awkward spaces, matching sets | Standard rooms, quick furnishing |
When bespoke is worth it
- The room has an unusual shape — a bay window, a long narrow living room, an alcove for a bed.
- The piece anchors the room — a main sofa or a dining table you will use for years.
- Everything needs to match — dining table and chairs, bed and bedside tables, in the same finish.
- You are working with an interior designer who has specified materials and dimensions. See furniture for interior designers.
When ready-made makes sense
Choose ready-made for secondary rooms, when a standard size already fits, or when you have found a design you love exactly as it is — for example, a model from an established brand. Indesign’s showroom has both: bespoke furniture made to order, and authorised KUKA Home pieces such as KUKA leather sofas.
How to decide, room by room
Many homes mix the two: bespoke for the main sofa, the dining table and the master bed, and ready-made for accent chairs and side tables. Start with the pieces you will live with most, and ask the showroom what can be adapted. Visit the showroom at C-29A, Block F, Mansarover Garden, opposite Kirti Nagar Fire Station, New Delhi 110015 (open every day from 10:30am to 8pm) or call 093108 51211.
