Short answer: custom furniture starts with a consultation about your room and needs, moves to a proposed design with dimensions and materials, and is made to order once you approve it. The timeline depends on the design, materials and size of the order and is confirmed when the design is final.
The process, step by step
- Consultation. Share the room — measurements, photographs, a floor plan or your interior designer’s drawings — and how you will use the piece.
- Design proposal. The maker proposes the form, dimensions and construction, and shows similar finished pieces where possible.
- Materials and finishes. Choose upholstery fabric or leather, stone, wood and metal finishes, ideally seeing them in person under natural light.
- Approval. You confirm the final design, materials and price. The timeline is set here.
- Making. Craftsmen build the frame, upholster or finish the piece, and check it against the approved design.
- Delivery and placement. The piece is delivered and placed in your room.
What to prepare before your first meeting
- Room measurements, including doors, lifts and stairs on the delivery route.
- Photographs of the room and of furniture you like.
- Any drawings or material boards from your interior designer.
- A sense of budget and how the piece will be used day to day.
How long does bespoke furniture take?
It depends on the design, the materials and the size of the order. Ask for a timeline once the design and materials are final, and plan larger projects early.
